A study conducted by the University of Scranton in 2012 examined the effectiveness and safety of green coffee bean extract (GCA™) on overweight subjects. During the study, participants received high-dose GCA (1050 mg), low-dose GCA (700 mg), or a placebo for six weeks, followed by a two-week break between treatments. The main measured parameters were body weight, body mass index, and body fat percentage.

Research Background: The study involved 16 overweight adults in a 22-week cross-sectional study aimed at evaluating the effectiveness and safety of green coffee bean extract, GCA™ product. Green coffee bean extract contains high concentrations of chlorogenic acids, which are known for their health benefits and influence on glucose and fat metabolism. Participants received different doses of GCA or a placebo, followed by a two-week break to reduce the effects of the previous treatment. The treatments were counterbalanced among the participants. Significant reductions were observed in body weight, body mass index, and body fat percentage, as well as a slight decrease in heart rate during the study. There was no significant change in diet during the study period. The reductions occurred during the GCA supplementation. Six participants’ body mass index shifted from pre-obesity to the normal weight range.

Results:

• Significant reduction in body weight (-8.04 ± 2.31 kg)
• Decrease in body mass index (-2.92 ± 0.85 kg/m^2)
• Reduction in body fat percentage (-4.44% ± 2.00%)
• Slight decrease in heart rate (-2.56 ± 2.85 beats/minute)
